Here we have a 2022 Oris Carl Brashear Cal. 401 40mm Limited Edition Bronze, this limited edition of 0602/2000 pieces commemorates the US Navy's first African-American Master Diver, Carl Brashear. Brashear joined the Navy in 1948 at 17 and graduated in 1956. In 1966, he had a devastating accident and lost the lower part of his leg; despite this, after a long recovery, he became the Navy's first amputee diver, he was re-certified in 1968 and was awarded Master Diver in 1970. The film Men of Honor tells his story. The curvaceous 40mm bronze case has a lug-to-lug length of 48mm and a case thickness of 12.5mm, giving the watch an impressive wrist presence. On the right side is a signed screw-down crown with a coin edge for grip. The unidirectional bronze bezel has raised 60-minute dive scale numerals and engraved markings. Excellent viewing angles are achieved by a domed on both sides sapphire crystal AR coating on the inside that sits above a striking deep blue dial with lumed bronze hour disc and rounded baton indexes; bronze baton hands sit above a sub-seconds at 6 o'clock. On the reverse, a stainless steel screw-down case back, engraved with the details of the watch around its edge and the special polished Carl Brashear helmet in relief and number out of 2000; inside, we have automatic Oris Cal. 401 (no date) the first watch to use this in-house movement, 24 jewels, beating at 28,800bph, a unidirectional skeletonised rotor and a 120-hour power reserve. The watch comes paired with its 20mm blue fabric strap secured by a bronze loop and signed fastener and comes with its Oris presentation box and paperwork.
